women archetypes in FKA Twigs’ album MAGDALENE, given sexist and religious stigmas

Abstract

The diversity of textual genres advances in line with the progress of humanity and its apparatus, providing multiple supports, especially through the media. Therefore, this article had as its main aim the investigation and enhancement of discussions on gender issues with focus on the image of women. To this end, a critical and discursive reading of the media was carried out based on compositions from the album MAGDALENE by FKA Twigs, released in 2019. Three songs were selected and discursively analyzed, which are: home with you, magdalene, and cellophane.  In that regard, as theoretical contribution, works were investigated in two main axes: the first one concerns to the critical discourse analysis, contemplating works such as Fairclough (1995, 2001), Melo (2010), and Benwell and Stokoe (2006); the second, in turn, is supported by gender studies such as Butler (2003) and Louro (1997). Above all, as a main perception in the analysis, it was realized that the sign “woman” is reduced to two subjects who echo the discourse of patriarchal society: the archetype of the promiscuous and vulgar woman, and the archetype of the pure and correct woman, which is understood to be the result of the religious and sexist influence that still persists in social molds.
