Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the approach to landscape teaching in the Architecture and Urbanism programme at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Cachoeira do Sul/RS campus, focusing on the subject of Urban and Landscape Design III. The discipline has as its theoretical basis works by exponents of the field of landscape study, which support the main axes of analysis, planning and proposition. The analytical axis is supported by methodological rigour and a multifaceted process that integrates quantitative and qualitative analyses of the landscape on a macro scale, referring to the municipality and region, and on a meso scale, referring to the landscape unit, allowing for a detailed understanding of the characteristics and dynamics of the territory. The practical axis includes landscape planning with the delineation of strategies and priority actions that support the design definitions for the landscape unit, ensuring that the proposals are aligned with the local context. The results show that the combination of theory and practice contributes to raising students' awareness of real contexts and to an articulated vision of the urban and rural landscape as an integrated system, understanding the landscape as an important land-use planning resource to promote the coexistence of economic, social, environmental and ecological interests.
