Abstract

The term "sponge cities" emerged in China in 2013, but there were already cities that functioned as sponges before that, with the aim of creating a system with solutions that mitigate the impacts of increasingly intense climate change. These solutions are designed so that rainwater is retained, absorbed and treated through permeable soils with filtering vegetation in urban areas. The system allows water absorption when replacing gray infrastructures with impermeable surfaces with green infrastructures with permeable areas. The urban fabric is transformed, creating large landscaped spaces that have an impactful role in the ecological landscape of cities. These transformations occur with the implementation of measures that reduce the flow of water into the soil, ensuring water permeability, reducing flooding. Since its conception, the city of Belo Horizonte has neglected the existence of water bodies in its urban plan, resulting in flooding problems over time. The objective is to discuss how sustainable solutions used in sponge cities to manage rainwater can mitigate urban drainage problems in Belo Horizonte, in a section of the Arrudas river.
