This article, Reason and Meaning in Eric Weil, offers a set of reasonable, though not exhaustive, arguments in support of the thesis that the search for meaning, particularly in Logic of Philosophy, arises from the dynamic interplay among philosophical categories, human attitudes, and reasonable deliberation. For Weil, discourse is not merely dialogue or casual communication; it constitutes the very possibility, as well as the ethical, logical, and political condition, of human action. As such, it provides legitimacy, coherence, and rational grounding for human decisions. Understanding the role of discourse is therefore essential for grasping how meaning emerges, legitimizes action, and orients human life in society. From this standpoint, discourse does not simply accompany action; it structures it, ensuring that human acts can be assessed according to reasonable, ethical, and political criteria. To develop this argument, the article is organized into two main sections, in addition to a brief introduction and final considerations: (1) a concise exposition of Weil’s central philosophical thesis, namely that the human being is continually confronted with the choice between reason and violence; and (2) an explanation of why the relationship between discourse and action is indispensable for understanding the search for meaning in Weil’s thought, as elaborated in his seminal work Logic of Philosophy.
