Abstract

The concept of sustainability has been spread in the modern era as a tool for environmental preservation and optimization of processes. In emergent countries it has been noticed that the older cities have been growing irregularly, taking inappropriate areas in favor of habitation or economic development. This dynamic in those cities englobes the implantation of cemeteries on the urban centers, most of the time randomly and without properly environment impacts studies, leading to a risk of soil and water contamination, also compromising the local landscape. So, the propose of this paper was to carry out an case study of a cemetery located at a countryside city from the state of Tocantins, Brazil, by means of a field visiting and data collection, photographic registering and application of environment impacts assessments methodologies idealized by Leopold et al. (1979) – Interactive Matrix and Sánchez (2013) – Descriptive Checklist. The data analysis pointed out a serious local environment deterioration caused by overcrowding and overlapping of sepultures, discard of domestic solid waste and other residues left by the visitors, such for those last ones were suggested mitigating measures in order to have them minimalized.
