Abstract

Botulism is a rare, serious, rapidly progressive and potentially lethal disease caused by botulinum toxin, one of the most potent neurotoxins produced by some species of clostridia bacteria, most often by Clostridium botulinum, a ubiquitous, rod-shaped Gram-positive bacillus, exclusively anaerobic, which can form spores, and easily isolated from soil, dust, vegetables and fruits. The term botulism includes food botulism, wound botulism, infant botulism, and intestinal toxemia. The main clinical manifestation of botulism is acute flaccid descending symmetric paralysis in a patient on alert status without fever or sensory changes, which may progress to respiratory compromise. Its treatment is based primarily on early diagnosis, intensive care and timely administration of botulinum antitoxin. This study intends to review current knowledge about botulism highlighting its clinical relevance, etiology, epidemiology, transmission, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. It can be concluded that botulism is a public health problem that requires special care in preventing its etiology, especially with regard to food preparation.
