Abstract

The present study aimed to carry out a chemical characterization and to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the inner bark extract of Cariniana rubra Gardner ex Miers. The extraction was carried out in a soxhlet extractor, with hydroethanolic solvent (70%), obtaining the crude extract (EB). In the chemical characterization, phytochemical analysis, Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array detector (LC-PDA) were performed. The content of phenolics, flavonoids and total tannins was quantified, also analyzing its antioxidant potential by the DPPH method. The presence of flavonoids, tannins, phytosterols / triterpenoids and saponins was detected. Phenolic acids (caffeic and ferulic), flavonoids (rutin and quercetin), steroids (campesterol, stigmasterol and β-sitosterol) and triterpenoids (β-amyrin, β-amyrin acetate, lupeol, lupeol acetate and taraxasterol) were found. The content of total flavonoids was what stood out the most (58.25 ± 0.23 mg RE/g), followed by the content of total phenolics (47.24 ± 0.29 mg EAG/g) and tannins (40. 32 ± 1.44mg EAG/g). The antioxidant activity found (25.43 ± 0.34 μg/ml) is equivalent to the antioxidant activity of the rutin standard (24.53 ± 0.47 μg/ml). This species indicated a pharmacological potential, therefore, important results to increase knowledge about the plant.
