Abstract

The application of hydrogel has been a strategy used to mitigate water stress in seedlings planted in degraded areas. This study evaluated the influence of hydrogel on the survival and growth of five native Amazonian species (Euterpe oleracea, Carapa guianensis, Dipteryx odorata, Theobroma grandiflorum, and Bactris gasipaes) in agroforestry systems without controlled irrigation. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Porto Velho, Rondônia, where plots with and without hydrogel were compared in terms of seedling survival and growth over 187 and 235 daysafter planting. The results showed that pupunha (55.92%) and cumaru (36.49%) had the highest survival rates, while açaí (1.32%), cupuaçu (1.74%), and andiroba (7.89%) exhibited significantly lower values. Statistical analysis did not indicate a significant effect of hydrogel on the survival of the tested species. Regarding height and diameter growth, only cumaru showed a statistically significant increase, suggesting greater adaptation to the experimental conditions. The findings indicate that hydrogel, under the evaluated conditions, was not sufficient to mitigate water stress in seedlings, especially given the severe drought observed during the experimental period. Therefore, complementary strategies, such as selecting more resistant species and implementing proper soil management, are essential for optimizing forest restoration and reducing irrigation costs in degraded areas of the Amazon.
