Microcredit has been adopted in several countries as a tool capable of generating income,
reducing social inequalities and empowering women. In this context, focusing on the gender
perspective, this article aims to analyze whether microcredit contributed to the empowerment
of women beneficiaries of the People's Bank in Palmas / Tocantins. The methodology adopted
is the Oral History that bares networks of beneficiaries' daily life, which gives them voice and
brings to the fore processes triggered by microcredit. The testimonies show that, although
microcredit brings improvements in living conditions, the empowerment of these clients was
not achieved in the sense of giving them conditions of emancipation, autonomy, social
participation, self-esteem and educational training.
