Abstract

The process of disinfection of water by solar radiation is called SODIS, and is currently used in 20 countries by more than 2 million people because it is a alternative treatment water of low-cost. This work had the objective of evaluating the potential of the southern region of Tocantins state, which presented excellent results even with cloudy weather and independent of the use of solar concentrator. The study was carried out in the municipality of Gurupi, where it was found sufficient solar incidence for the disinfection of 100% of E. coli (1.477 log), in 4 hours of solar exposure, and of total Coliforms (4.041 log) in 6 hours of exposure in well water trials, with turbidity of 0.52 NTU. After this process the well water would be bacteriologically suitable to meet the limits established by Ministry of Health Ordinance No. 2914, of December 12, 2011, which recommends the absence of total coliforms and E. coli in 100 mL of water for consumption human. Reconstitution of these microorganisms in treated sample was not observed after storage for up to 66 hours in the absence of light and at room temperature.
