Abstract

General theme: Biological and health sciences. Objective: To test the relationship between eating behavior and subjective perception of stress in university students during the pandemic period. Methods: This study is part of the 24-hour Movement Behavior and Metabolic Syndrome (24h-MESYN), a prospective cohort. The sample was 195 undergraduate students (68.7% women; 44.6% aged between 21 and 25 years; 65.8% enrolled in a health sciences course; 24.5% in the 1st to 3rd semester). Data was collected during the first half of 2021 in the city of Imperatriz, MA. We collected self-reported measures online using the Perceived Stress Scale (14 items) and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (33 items). We assessed positive and negative stress dimension scores as exposures (representing perceived self-efficacy and helplessness, respectively) and emotional intake, dietary restriction and external intake scores as outcomes. We examined associations using multilevel linear regression. Results: We did not observe an association between perceived stress (positive and negative domain) with emotional intake and dietary restriction. However, after adjusting for biological sex and age, we observed that the negative domain of perceived stress (β = 0.02 [95% CI: 0.006 to 0.04]) was associated with external intake. Conclusion: The perception of helplessness was associated with eating behavior among university students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
