Integrating Technology into Libras Teaching:

The Experience with the Hand Talk App for Teaching Classifier Verbs.

Abstract

The use of technology in teaching Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) has gained prominence, especially with the use of translation apps, such as Hand Talk. This article explores the application of this app in teaching classifier verbs in Libras at the higher education level, investigating how the tool contributes to students' learning and how they interact with the automatic translations. The research focuses on identifying errors in the translations made by the app and how students correct these mistakes, with the support of pedagogical guidance. To achieve this, recordings of sentences using the classifier verbs CAIR (fall), BATER (hit), and COLOCAR (put) were analyzed, with students correcting the app’s errors by applying the signs properly and using the correct movement for the specific context. The results show that the use of the app helps in learning Libras, but it is crucial for the teacher to be present to guide the students. Although the app is useful, it may make mistakes, such as using signs that are not the most appropriate for certain situations. The research highlights the role of post-method pedagogy, promoting a more dynamic and contextualized teaching approach that effectively integrates technology into educational practice.
