Abstract

This article aims to analyze the novels Memory Mambo (1996) and La loca de la casa (2003), by Achy Obejas and Rosa Montero, respectively, exploring non-linear and fragmented narratives that challenge hegemonic notions of truth. The authors, using postmodern techniques, examine space-time displacements and the influence of different locations, languages and cultures. The narratives highlight issues of gender, race and class, among others, rescuing silenced memories to deconstruct monolithic concepts about memory. Juani and Rosa, the protagonists, criticize the linearity of the past, promoting critical reflection to subvert dominant representations. The decentralization of the subject reveals the complexity of postmodern identities. The (dis)continuity in the narrative, with the inclusion of diverse memories, highlights the importance of listening to marginalized stories, challenging exclusive and excluding versions of the past. The return to the past is not nostalgic, but seeks a plural understanding of memory, emphasizing the need for representation in the construction of the historical narrative.
