DIREITOS HUMANOS E RESPONSABILIDADE SOCIAL CORPORATIVA NO ÂMBITO DO COMÉRCIO INTERNACIONAL:A MINERADORA BARRICK GOLD E AS VIOLÊNCIAS SEXUAIS CONTRA MULHERES NA PAPUA NOVA GUINÉ ENTRE 2006 E 2010

Abstract

Reports of gross sexual assaults among other types of violence have been plentiful among indigenous communities living near the Porgera gold mine, a result of the Barrick Gold Joint Venture in Papua New Guinea. Security guards hired to patrol the perimeter of the mine and to protect its properties have physically abused many local landowners who have been targeted by sexual assaults, including group rapes. Therefore, this research aimed to identify how harmonious coexistence can be achieved among the international protection of human rights, corporate social responsibility and the activities arising from international trade in its various modalities, with the specific objective of analyzing how the mining company Barrick Gold may exercise responsibility for the human rights violations committed by its security agents during its activities at the Porgera mine in the State of Papua New Guinea regarding the various allegations of harassment and sexual violence that occurred mainly during the period from 2006 to 2010. In order to do that, we used bibliographic and documentary research as research mechanisms, with the help of the inductive method and the theoretical basis that incorporates International Human Rights Law, Corporate Social Responsibility and relevant doctrine.
