Abstract

Leprosy is caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which is highly infectious and low in pathogenicity. Diagnosis, treatment and cure put several challenges, especially in pregnant women. This study aims to analyze the profile of pregnant women who abandoned leprosy treatment in the State of Tocantins, considering socioepidemiological and clinical aspects with a descriptive approach and analysis of secondary data provided by the State Health Department. The results showed 63 pregnant women with leprosy, 46% in Palmas - TO, 50.8% between 18 and 34 years old, 30.2% were in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy, 69.8% declared themselves to be mixed, 19% had incomplete high school education, 81% lived in urban areas, 33.3% are housewives, 60.3% have a dimorphic clinical form, 66.7% were classified as multibacillary, 58.7% presented GPD (grade of physical disability) 0 at diagnosis. All cases were classified as new cases, 52.4% were detected in spontaneous demand, 69.8% had an initial treatment regimen of MDT/MB/12 doses, 39.7% had current GPD 0, 60.3% were on a current treatment regimen of MDT/MB/12 doses and 69.8% were discharged due to cure and a dropout rate of 17%. The highlighted profile explains the importance of aligning strategies for this group and better training for professionals who work with pregnant women.
