Abstract

When we consider the mediations of capitalist accumulation as a social practice, understanding them as part of the relationships that shape a given landscape, we admit that the cycles of capitalism promote changes that are inscribed in the landscape through models of production and appropriation of space , architectural types, etc. Which leads us to reflect on the consequences of the current regime of accumulation in the production of space, especially regarding “creative destruction”, a notion related by Schumpeter (1988) to the way in which entrepreneurs operate who admit new combinations in the production of goods with the aim of enhancing its consumption. This stance has been very common in the treatment of the real estate market in consolidated areas, which led us to hypothesize that this is the case in the portion of the center of Campina Grande (PB), located around Açude Velho, as urban renewal is underway. justified by a symbolic obsolescence that has resulted in new architectural typologies and the speculative retention of real estate and land assets. Therefore, we aim to report the analysis of this urban landscape, traditionally valued by the real estate market, through the historical geographic methodology. Contributing, therefore, to reflection on the socioeconomic processes that justify and drive the transformation of historical landscapes through creative destruction.
