Abstract

Interventions in public markets are frequent agendas in municipal administrations in numerous cities today. This article takes as a case study the market of São Brás, in Belém, and from the documents made available by the municipal management, articles published in the media and the literature review on the subject, problematizes aspects of the proposal of requalification, restoration and recent refunctionalization for this public equipment. It briefly focuses on its history, identifying the moment when there were other interventions that altered its architecture and promoted changes in uses, until its current degradation, this, derived from neglect and a deliberate decision of abandonment by the public sphere, disguised in the speech of natural deterioration of the property.  It also highlights the assumptions that underlie the proposal, opposing the idea of an exclusive formula for its recovery, pointing out the possibilities of intervening in these spaces meeting the new consumption needs, but maintaining their functions at the service of the populations of the places where they settled.
