Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the application of modified Team-Based Learning method. This was a cross-sectional study. The Clinical Biochemical course was designed using a modified Team-Based Learning approach with four phases: out-of-class preparation, idea development, concept application and learning conference. The effects of this new strategy, which was called Clinical Cases and Teamwork-Based Learning (CC-TBL), on students’ performance were measured by tests. Individual and team test scores were compared using T-test. At the end of the modules, students’ perceptions about Clinical Cases and Teamwork-Based Learning were analyzed by a self-administered questionnaire with open (five-point Likert scale) and closed questions. The team test scores were significantly higher than the individual test scores in all modules of Clinical Biochemical course. Students were generally interesting by the methodology and the total students’ satisfaction about their experience was 4.49 of 5.0 points (mean of the scores for all questions). The application of modified in the Team-Based Learning indicated positive student perceptions about the learning method. Modifications on classical Team-Based Learning made possible to include teamwork out-of-class with discussions about clinical cases what can help the students to improve the learning process and teamwork skills in the course.
