Abstract

Popularly known as kala azar, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis in which the dog is the main urban reservoir. Euthanasia of infected dogs is one of the measures stipulated to control the disease. However, the way in which this measure is carried out, as well as the lack of assistance after it, causes mismatches with the mental health of the guardians who, abruptly, are forced to break the affective bond with their pet. This study aimed to analyze the cases of tutors who had dogs euthanized by VL, in order to know the mental health care actions directed to these people and to verify if the public policies directed to VL include the public mental health of the tutors. Through exploratory-descriptive research and qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were carried out, recorded, transcribed and, later, analyzed through Bardin's Content Analysis. The results showed the experience of 15 tutors, making it possible to identify that public health policies (PPS) directed to VL end in euthanasia and, therefore, do not contemplate the mental health of tutors. It is hoped that this study may reveal the importance of mental health in the process of controlling VL.
