Abstract

This work presents an experience report of two of the English Language actions of a program entitled Alvorecer at the Federal University of Northern Tocantins (UFNT). The Alvorecer program aims to promote actions that can help undergraduate students in subjects with the highest number of failures, in addition to promoting research and extension at the University through articulations between UFNT and the community. The English/Portuguese Literature course worked with the project “Sing your village and you will be universal: language, identity and local context”, an interdisciplinary project that intertwined three axes - English Language, Reading and Production of texts in Portuguese and Literature produced in Tocantins - The project activities were carried out at the university with undergraduate students in English/Portuguese Literature and at a state basic education school in the city of Araguaína in the north of Tocantins. The actions of the English Language nucleus included a workshop that aimed to awaken students' interest in the English Language , Literature, using tools from the local context (mini-short stories by local authors) and discussing the themes that involve the historical and social process that trigger the teaching/learning of the Language. For this production, we used the theoretical frameworks of Applied Linguistics, such as critical English teaching, interdisciplinarity and interactivity. Authors such as Candido, 1995, Celani (2000) and Rocha (2007) included the references. In the end, we were able to understand, through the results, the importance of activities that aim at interaction and the production of knowledge through comprehensive perspectives.
