O perigo da confirmação não-empírica

In the present paper we present and translate the text "The Danger of non-empirical confirmation", by Carlo Rovelli, Italian cosmologist, one of the proponents of loop quantum gravitation. This is the text presented by Rovelli in 2015 during the so-called "Munich Debate" on the problem of the empirical basis of the scientific method. Rovelli analyzes - and opposes - the proposal of philosopher of science Richard Dawid, who in String Theory and the Scientific Method, argues that scientific theories can be evaluated, accepted, and defended from non-empirical criteria. Rovelli, despite agreeing with Dawid on the historical importance of non-empirical arguments in the development of physical theories, maintains that empirical confirmation must remain indispensable for scientific practice and the cumulative success of science.
