ROLE MODELS AND GENDER STEREOTYPES: #More Wonder Women in Film

Recent media researches reveal core characteristics in most of the hegemonic Eurocentric film production, which instigate and perpetuate (intersectional) female gender stereotypes that permeate diverse cultures within global societies. New studies from the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Signal Analysis and Interpretation Lab (SAIL), and the Common Sense Media Report Watching Gender: How Stereotypes in Movies and on TV Impact Kids' Development, confirm that gender stereotypes in movies and TV shows are far more persistent than generally believed. They are incredibly effective at teaching children and teenagers what local/national/global societies expect from them. This article analyses the need for more positive and affirmative role models.
