Abstract

This work had as objective to characterize the floristic composition and a phytosociological component in a fragment of Caatinga forest located in the city of Caicó, Rio Grande do Norte. An entirely simple random sampling from 12 sampling units of 20 x 20 (400 m²). Has been inventoried for each sampling unit, all individuals woody arboreal forest alive with circumference of breast height (≥ 6 cm), the diameter at the base to 0,30 m above ground level and the chest diameter the 1,30 m above ground level by individual. Fitossociológicos parameters were evaluated in the vertical and horizontal structure, floristic diversity through the Shannon-Weaver index (H'), dominance of Simpson (C) and Pielou evenness (J'). 716 were sampled individuals distributed in nine species and six families, and the pea family Fabaceae, that is the most representative in number and species Mimosa tenuiflora and Aspidosperma pyrifolium responsible for 93,58% of individuals found on the plots. The diversity of species found in the area was considered low with only nine species.
