Abstract

In the present study, characterized as an exploratory-descriptive bibliographical review with a qualitative approach, an overview of the chemical and medicinal properties of buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L.) and its products is presented. The M. flexuosa palm is very abundant in Brazil and its extractivism is integrated to the popular knowledge of the peoples of that country. M. flexuosa has chemical properties of great nutritional and medicinal relevance. Among the chemical compounds present in the fruit, we highlight the carotenoids, fatty acids and flavonoids. The fruit also has a wide range of minerals in its composition, such as phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, sulfur and iron. Regarding the medicinal potential of the M. flexuosa, it is worth mentioning the use as an adjuvant in wound and burn healing, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. Thus, the importance of encouraging the preservation of this plant species, which is widely threatened by the advancement of the agricultural frontier and urban development, is evidenced. In addition, the need to encourage the advancement of scientific research aimed at the chemical characterization of bioactive compounds from the buriti with the perspective of reaching the development of products and / or processes of biotechnological interest.
