Abstract

Cutting ants are social insects that present reproductive and non-breeding castes, living in permanent colonies. They cause great damage to both in home gardens and in reforestation plantations. So, control it is necessary, but the indiscriminate use of the chemical control representing a great questioning about the environmental impacts of the use of the pesticides and their behavior in the ecosystems. However, there is a need to control these pests. Among the new perspectives adopted, the botanical extracts are presented with great potential use. Some plants present in the nature may have repellent or deterrent characteristics to the insect, due to the action of secondary metabolites. The alternative control of pests such as the use of plants with insecticidal characteristics can be very promising. Some plants of the family Lamiaceae can be used to repel insects, as is the case of peppermint (Mentha piperita), which is easy to germinate and sprout. Another herb that can be used in insect control is Arruda (Ruta graveolens). Therefore, the sense of the present study is evaluate the efficiency of peppermint and Arruda extract, in a qualitative and quantitative way, in the control of cuttings ants in an experiment in the “Cinturão Verde”, at the School of Agronomy - UFG. And presenting promising results, as both control plants were efficient in the control of the ants.
