Abstract

In the State of Tocantins since 2007, there has been an intensification of forestry, especially eucalyptus,
with due regard to the Bico do Papagaio region, for the production of charcoal as a renewable bio-reducer,
an input for the steel industry. This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of eucalyptus cultivation areas, in
the Bico do Papagaio region, in the years 2006 and 2019, using geoprocessing techniques. The analysis of
physical and strategic aspects and potentialities for the production of eucalyptus in the region were carried
out. There was a significant growth dynamic of the crop, from 2006 to 2019, especially in the municipalities
of São Bento and Araguatins. There was a predominance of smooth relief, which favors the mechanization
of the crop. There was a greater predominance of Quartzarenic Neosols in areas with eucalyptus production,
which requires proper management of the culture, due to its low natural fertility, combined with water
deficiency. There is a predominance of the “marginal” climatic aptitude class, enabling its development, but
the use of techniques and management appropriate to each local reality must be considered. The region
has favorable transport logistics and strategic location due to the proximity of the steel poles, to meet the
demand for charcoal.
