Abstract

Cassava cultivation plays a significant economic role for family farming in the state of Pará, acting not only as a source of income, but also as a means of ensuring adequate and quality food. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to diagnose, from a socio-economic point of view, the rural Marajoara communities located on the banks of the Cumarapí River (Vila Gomes Community and Castanhal Community), the Acutipereira River (Santo Ezequiel Community) and the Anapu River (Santa Luzia Community), located in the municipality of Portel (PA), in order to better understand the families' living conditions and their relationship with cassava cultivation as a source of food and income. The families in the communities were characterized using demographic indicators (age, number of people per community, etc.), social indicators (water supply, basic sanitation, electricity, schooling, etc.) and economic indicators (sources of income, family income, social benefits, etc.), which were collected using semi-structured questionnaires. It was found that the communities had a low quality of life, due to the lack of basic infrastructure, as well as relying heavily on agro-extractivism as a source of subsistence and income, especially cassava cultivation in this region.
