Abstract

The present study aimed to analyze the evidence available in the scientific literature on effective communication between the maternity nursing team that contributes to patient safety. To this end, an integrative review was conducted guided by the question: “What effective communication strategies between members of the maternity nursing team contribute to patient safety?” We searched for primary studies in the PubMed, CINAHL, BDENF, LILACS, MEDLINE and Embase databases. Articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish, in any period of time, that answered the research question were included. Subsequently, data was extracted from the included primary studies using a script created by the authors. The studies were then evaluated using tools to assess the levels of evidence and quality of the studies included in the review. Therefore, 15 studies were selected, of which nine (60%) are quantitative and six (40%) are qualitative. To present the results, two categories were defined: the use of communication facilitating resources; and, verbal communication: strengths and weaknesses. The evidence showed that effective communication in the maternity ward enables the continuity of care in a safe manner and, consequently, favors the quality of care.
