THE UNIVERSE OF THE UNIVERSITY: FROM SINGULARITIES AND DIVERSITIES TO THE PROCESS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

Abstract

The university is a universe of opportunities and values, as it aggregates and has a social impact on the production of scientific, technological and innovative knowledge. The aim was to understand singularities and diversities in the teaching and learning process from the perspective of undergraduates. A qualitative study, based on Grounded Theory and Symbolic Interactionism, with 35 participants. The academic environment is permeated by characteristics that demand special attention, planning and interventions. Student assistance needs to offer opportunities and mobilize resources to ensure equity in the face of differences. Health care should be a priority, not just limited to physical health, but also mental health. Prejudice is suffered by undergraduates in different conditions, indicating the necessary inclusion and a more welcoming university environment. The inter-relationship between students and teachers is difficult, as it lacks empathy and more appropriate teaching methodologies that consider student co-participation in the teaching-learning process. Respecting the singularities and diversities of this academic universe, its successes and difficulties, is the easiest way to achieve a more inclusive, welcoming university, with more effective teaching methods for training undergraduates who are involved with their education and their social role.
