Abstract

Atlantic forest has 12.4% of its original size distributed in small islands suffering from the effects of forest fragmentation. Conservation units are used as the primary tool for biodiversity conservation; however, the protected area is still insufficient to preserve the entire diversity of species. In this regard, this study aimed to assess the importance of the State Park of Araucarias in terms of biodiversity and endemism rate to determine the effectiveness of its preservation. We collected the data between July 2013 and July 2014 in 100 plots of 100 m² each. We sampled in these plots all tree individuals with a diameter at breast height (1.30 meters above the ground) equal to or greater than 5 cm. The species were identified and classified regarding endemism and conservation status according to categories determined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Among the 105 species recorded, we found 10 endemic species distributed in eight genera and seven families. We reported two individuals of Hovenia edulis Thunb., which have a high potential for invasion and the capacity to cause biodiversity loss. We recorded ten endemic species, of which seven have no studies regarding endemism, one is classified as endangered (EN), and two as the least concern (LC). The analyses conducted lead to the conclusion that the State Park of Araucarias has proven effective in terms of biodiversity, but it has a low level of endemism.
