Abstract

The article looks at the soy complex in Tocantins in the context of globalized agriculture, with the aim of building a comprehensive view of the soy complex in the state. The paper uses bibliographical analysis and quantitative data to produce a critical analysis of the development model. It is understood that the establishment of the soy complex in the state has taken place at an accelerated pace, with the rural dynamics of the region embedded in the expansion of the agricultural frontier over the Cerrado biome, the most destroyed and threatened in the last two decades, especially in the Matopiba region. In light of this, Tocantins is understood as part of a Specific Zone of Intense Accumulation (ZEIA), as it identifies and reproduces an infrastructure and a series of devices that enable and encourage soybean agricultural production in the state. The scope of the article points to the balance of economic planning around the exploitation of territories and natural resources: increasing deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as deepening social inequalities. The article closes with a perspective of the intensification of tensions at the heart of the soy complex, which are understood as fundamental contradictions of the development model itself.
