Abstract

The illegal trade in animals is a significant factor in the reduction of biodiversity in Brazil. The Brazilian fauna is made up of a large number of animal species, about 10% of all animal species in the world. The removal of wild fauna from their natural habitat to supply the animal traffic causes ecological imbalances. The present work aimed to quantify the animals collected by the Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF) in the national territory in order to increase the knowledge of the scientific and popular community. In this work, an analysis of the PRF data collection was carried out. The results obtained indicate that approximately 30% of the animals seized by the PRF are classified as "unidentified", something that is worrying because the data exposed, in fact, portray merely a small portion of the real proportion of animal trafficking in Brazil.
