Abstract

Several techniques have been studied in the treatment of leachate from sanitary landfills. Among them, there are the Advanced Oxidative Processes (AOP's). Given the above, this research aimed to evaluate the effect of AOP using Fenton's reagent, at different concentrations of iron (Fe) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), in the treatment of synthetic slurry. An estimation method (Swiss method) was applied to the leachate flow from a controlled sanitary landfill. A test was carried out with a solution of methylene blue and distilled water, to verify the efficiency of the treatment technique. After the test run with methylene blue, a synthetic slurry was prepared and the Fenton solution was added. The result of estimating percolate production, using the Swiss method, was 2.15 l.s-1. For the methylene blue degradation test, the highest dye reduction was obtained in test 10 (absorbance equal to 0.010). For manure degradation, the best concentrations used for the highest COD removal were observed in test 3 (73%) where the H2O2 dosage was 0.32mM and Fe++ 0.09mM. The POA using the Fenton reagent proved to be a very effective alternative.
