Abstract

Depression is a mental disorder characterized by sadness, loss of interest and low self-esteem, among others. Among the treatments of choice, there are psychotherapies, antidepressants (synthetic drugs) and medicinal plants - phytotherapy. Depression and anxiety are estimated to be responsible for an annual loss of productivity of more than a trillion dollars. When dealing with cost-effectiveness studies to determine which would be the best reference medication for the treatment of depression, studies are scarce or non-existent in most countries. In this way, the present study seeks to compare antidepressant drugs with herbal medicines used in the treatment of depression in terms of their cost-effectiveness, also exposing the confrontation of the side effects of each one, in the municipalities of Palmas, Araguaína and Gurupi in the State of Tocantins. The cost-benefit analysis was evaluated considering the average cost of medication per day of treatment and the lowest number of side effects, and a price comparison was carried out between the acquisition of drugs in drugstores or pharmacies and price comparison between the cities of the study.
