Abstract

Hospital infection and resistance to antimicrobials are major public health problems, as they increase morbidity, mortality, and length of hospital stay. Secondary hospital infections occur during hospitalization or after discharge, related to the primary infectious process and the hospital environment. The objective was to record cases of secondary infection in a public hospital in the State of Tocantins. Culture and antibiogram results were collected from patients suspected of being infected by another infectious agent. The samples were collected by the Hospital Laboratory, sown in specific culture media (Mueller Hinton, MacConkey, and Chromogenic) and biochemical tests. Then they were submitted to the minimum inhibitory concentration test (MIC). The most prevalent strains were A. baumannii (28%) and K. pneumoniae (24%), in the respiratory tract and anal area (rectal swab). A very complicated resistance profile was observed, showing multidrug resistance in all isolated strains. More effective control strategies are needed to reduce the circulation of these multi-resistant strains, as well as enhance antisepsis and recycling processes for professionals.
