Abstract

Feeding in the first year of life is essential; this period is characterized by rapid growth, development and formation of eating habits. This study is characterized by being descriptive, exploratory, cross-sectional, and aimed to evaluate the food intake of children in the first year of life they attended the Basic Health Units. Data collection was performed by applying a semi-structured questionnaire with sociodemographic and anthropometric variables of the mother and the nutritional status of the child. The SPSS software (version 22.0) was used for statistical analysis. For all tests, the significance level of 5% was adopted. The prevalence of breastfeeding was 66.64% and 23.64% children were overweight. The consumption of healthy foods was considered satisfactory, especially when the female to the male sex was compared, with the exception of the consumption of vegetables, which was low in both sexes (14.13% female and 13.04% male). The findings showed an important introduction of foods classified as unhealthy. The pattern of inadequate food consumption identified may compromise the child's health in the short and long term. It is necessary to prioritize activities of promotion and support for adequate feeding for children in early childhood.
