Epidemiological profile of human visceral leishmaniasis in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil

Abstract

Human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) is an important public health problem in Brazil affecting thousands of people annually. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of HVL in Pernambuco, Brazil. It is a descriptive study of an historical series (2005-2014) using databases of information systems of reportable diseases (SINAN) and mortality (SIM) of cases of Visceral Leishmaniasis residents in that State. For the analysis, it was used the Stata-Data Analysis and Statiscal Software for descriptive analysis and realization of the Student "t" test. The sample was composed of 954 cases. It was identified that there was variation in the number of cases per year and 2014 had the largest number of cases in the series. Most of the cases were male (61,3%), age 14 years (58,4%) and education until high school (72,9%). At the beginning of the series, the majority of the cases (66%) lived in the countryside and, in recent years, in the urban area. The most frequent clinical manifestations were fever, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, weakness, thinning and pallor. Visceral leishmaniasis affecting especially children and males. In addition, loss of characteristic of zoonosis of disease with increased proportionality of cases in urban centers.
