Abstract

In film movies, linguistic mechanisms are used that refer to the situational context, and are interpreted through the conversational cooperation that the participants assume in a conversation. In this way, film scripts resort to implicit contents, which are only recovered by the fact that the interlocutors are part of the same discourse community. Thus, this work aims to understand how the breakdown of conversational maxims can maintain racist filmic discourses, electing as corpus of analysis the film M-8 Quando a morte socorre a vida (DE, 2020). Structural racism can take place through various forms, from the most mundane tasks of everyday life to large institutional corporations. In this, the theoretical referential will dwell on pragmatics and the theory of implicatures and conversational maxims (ESPINDOLA, 2010; PINTO, 2004), as well as brush by the theme of structural racism in Brazilian society (ALMEIDA, 2018). The hypothesis of this paper is that the breakdown of conversational maxims is a mechanism used to reproduce normative discourses and stigmas about black people in Brazilian society.
