THE ROLE OF NARRATIVE IN RECONSTRUCTING THE HISTORY OF THE MACACO COMMUNITY IN URUAÇU (GO)

This article aims to showcase the vernacular characteristics of the Macaco speech community, a rural community located in the municipality of Uruaçu in the northern region of the state of Goiás. The study establishes a dialogue with Labov's (2008) sociolinguistic theory to explore the significance of narratives in comprehending the vernacular of a specific speech community. Furthermore, theoretical support was provided by the studies of Rezende (2021), Gonzalez (2020) and Balosa (2022), which contribute to thinking about the role of narrative in strenghtening specialized and academic knowledge. The oral narratives presented, which served as the corpus for the analysis in this study, ar from two residentes of the Macaco community, with whom I spoke at two diferent times. The research reveals that, in addition to unveiling the formal characteristics of the community's speech, oral narratives proved to be a rich mechanism for retrieving memories related to the formation of Macaco, which is strongly related to the promises of modernity by the Brazilian state.
