READING OF TIME IN A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD

Abstract

This paper promotes an analysis of the representation of time in the novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, by the American writer Jennifer Egan, focusing on its leading effect in the construction of the characters and the narrative structure of the work. Such reflections are guided by studies of contemporary literature and its transgression strategies through the non-linear temporal displacement promoted by the narrative. To do so, it is discussed how the structural possibilities were expanded in the text, since time does not carry fixed ways of development. Thus there are different types of narration in the universe of the novel, which promotes an expedition not only through the characters’ lifetime in the novel, but also through time itself. This process allows us to elaborate considerations on the conduction of contemporary narratives through elements such as time and its impacts on literary works.
