Abstract

The theme of the disease has produced many characters and stories in 20th century literature. In addition to an evaluation of the history of literature, we believe it is pertinent to understand the enunciative mechanisms of naming or denying naming that engender or hide diseases and possible linguistic and discursive motivations that underlie these linguistic processes. We chose as a starting point a small analysis of the term diabetes, as elaborated by the linguist Émile Benveniste (1947). Then, we analyzed texts related to the problem, namely, "The form and the meaning in language" (PLG II) and "The blasphemy and the euphemia" (PLG II). This last text also deals with a name and name hiding. From these studies, we removed the operationalization of the analysis of another word, implicit in a chronicle by Eliane Brum, published in the book A vida que ninguém vê (2006). Finally, we demonstrate different ‘ways of language” are marked in the agency of meanings in the place that disease occupies in ficctional discourse for the subject.
