Passivas eventivas no Português de Moçambique

This paper aims to describe the process of construction of eventive passives sentences involving monotransitive and ditransitive verbs by speakers of Mozambican Portuguese. Principles of generative-transformational grammar, qualitative and quantitative methodologies enlighten this study. Data comprise passive sentences written by subgroups of high school and University students who speak Portuguese as a second language. The study reveals that, in general, (1) speakers from the two groups form passive sentences involving monotransitive verbs according to the principles of the European Portuguese, however, (2) when ditransitive verbs are involved, construction of the passive sentences according to particular strategies surpass the sentences according to the grammar of the European Portuguese. In addition, (3) construction of dative passives stands out as the main tendency and (4) members, preferably, use [+Human] and [+Animated] elements as subjects of passive clauses. Linguistic contact and language change regarding objects of verbs are the main explanation for the tendencies identified. However, the new strategies of the Mozambican variety of the Portuguese language are socially and linguistically systematic and stable.
