In this article, we seek to explore the varied and complex relationships between science and metaphysics. We argue that the use of metaphysics is inevitable for scientific research and the elaboration of theories and models. These must start from metaphysical assumptions about the nature of reality and knowledge. First, we present metaphysics, both historically and philosophically. Next, we offer a brief but clear definition of what we mean by metaphysics in the scope of this work. Finally, we turn to various natural philosophers and physicists to discuss the theme of the inevitability of metaphysics in natural sciences, especially theoretical physics.
