The article relates modernity and democracy based on the analysis of the political registers of language in the work of Eric Weil. The idea of modernity is taken from Weil’s description of modern society. Weil sees modern society as calculating, materialist, mechanistic and global, characteristics that not only put society and historical communities in opposition, but that exert a strong pressure on individuals. Naturally, this picture has immense repercussions for our democracies. The analysis of the political registers of language leads us to consider the role of discourse and discussion in democracies, but, above all, to think about the importance of dialogue as a political language in a “strong sense”, whose resumption is particularly urgent in the current political scenario.
