The essay proposes a reading of two stories by Guimarães Rosa, “The third bank of
the river”, from First Stories, and “Desenredo”, from Tutameia, both will be at some point
compared to Melville's Bartleby, the Scrivener. From Rosa's titles, two powers will be deduced,
one as a neutralizer that abdicates everything, the other, also a neutralizer, that wants
everything. Finally, it is proposed an idea of reading that ends in the stories.
