JOURNALISM, POLITICS AND CORONELISM: THE USE OF THE NEWSPAPER O ESTADO DO MARANHÃO AS A TOOL FOR BUILDING POLITICAL CAPITAL IN THE ELECTIONS FOR STATE GOVERNMENT IN 2014
Keywords:
Jornalismo, Eleições, Maranhão, Política, CoronelismoAbstract
The paper explores the relation between journalism and power from the analysis of the construction of the character Edson Lobão Filho during the 2014 local elections. The purpose of the research by analyzing 100 issues of the newspaper (June, 28 to October, 5) is to investigate the mechanisms used as an attempt to build political capital to Lobão Filho, then a Senator alternate whom never had run an election before as main candidate. The data show that the coverage of the newspaper did not follow neither the journalistic logic (newsmaking logic and newsworthiness criteria) neither the media logic (a wider logic which refers to mediatization of society, ie, the process of submission of social actors to the most suitable frame to occupy some space in the media). The coverage was guided by the old and anachronistic political logic, based on coronelism and patrimonialism, which are features of the political group the newspaper represents.
