Abstract

Stroke (Cerebrovascular Accident) is the second leading cause of death worldwide and represents a significant public health challenge. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiological profile of stroke mortality in the city of São Paulo from 2011 to 2021. This is an observational ecological time-series epidemiological study. Data from the Department of Informatics of the Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS) were used, analyzing deaths in individuals over 50 years of age. The variables included gender, race, age group, and educational level, as well as crude and specific mortality rates per 100,000 inhabitants. During the analyzed period, 11,652 stroke-related deaths were recorded in São Paulo, predominantly among women (53.42%), white individuals (67.59%), and the elderly over 80 years of age (49.88%). The results revealed a reduction in mortality from 2011 to 2017/2018, followed by an increase until 2021, possibly influenced by the covid-19 pandemic. Educational level showed an inverse relationship with deaths, while aging was identified as the predominant risk factor. Continuous epidemiological monitoring and public health policies aimed at the prevention and appropriate management of stroke are essential for achieving better outcomes.
