Abstract

This study aimed to understand how living on the streets affects the human development of individuals in this condition, examining how marginalization, stigma, social hygiene, and lack of work opportunities impact their identities. A qualitative, field research method was used, with semi-structured interviews conducted with three persons on street situation from Palmas-TO. The data were analyzed taking inspiration from historical-dialectical materialism lens. The results were divided into categories of analysis. In the first category, the study explored the root causes behind the "bad luck" of persons in street situation, concluding that the devaluation of work and mass unemployment are key factors driving individuals to such extreme conditions, significantly affecting their social bonds. The second category examined the link between drug dependency and commodity fetishism, showing that drug use is not just for leisure but is integral to the individual’s identity. The final category noted that while capitalism progresses in society, the street situation population continues to grow. The study highlights the importance of understanding this condition as a reserve work force and a life situation imposed by the capitalist system, which traps individuals in social misery and leaves them at the mercy of fate.
