Abstract

This study evaluates the use of ground glass as a partial substitute for sand in the production of non-structural concrete. Faced with the environmental challenges generated by civil construction, such as the extraction of natural resources and the inadequate disposal of vitreous waste, the research proposes a sustainable approach to the manufacture of concrete. Laboratory tests were carried out, varying the levels of replacement of sand by glass, with different granulometries, to analyze the mechanical and physical properties and durability of the concrete. The results showed that the granulometry of the glass influences the absorption of water by capillarity and the compressive strength. The smaller particle sizes, combined with gravel, showed greater efficiency in reducing water absorption, while the larger particle sizes showed better performance in terms of compressive strength. It is concluded that the partial replacement of sand by ground glass is a viable alternative, contributing to the mitigation of environmental impacts associated with improper glass disposal and sand extraction.
