Abstract

The increase of the paricá (Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber) ex Ducke) planted area in Brazil, mainly in the Amazon region, reflects its rapid growth in height and diameter, the characteristics of the wood vary between species, among trees of the same species. The objective of this work was to perform the physical characterization of paricá wood, in different diameter classes at 5 years of age, 20 trees were felled, of which 200. In sequence the test specimens were subjected to saturation, drying and acclimatization, to obtain data used in calculations of density (MEb), longitudinal shrinkage (εlong), radial shrinkage (εrad), tangential shrinkage (εtang), volumetric shrinkage (Δv), anisotropy coefficient (T/R), and porosity (Φ), respectively. Paricá wood was generally characterized by low density and high porosity. Largest density was found in the largest diametric grades, stability was also higher in these conditions, classifying the wood as not retractable, even with high anisotropy coefficient.
